The toughest challenge I’ve ever faced, heat, pain, emotion, and everything in between, but I loved it. London did not disappoint.
What an experience, and what a race for my first marathon.
There were a lot of nerves and anxiety leading up to it, making sure I was hydrated (but not too much), carb loading properly, and trying to stay off my feet as much as possible for the couple days before. The open top bus tour came in handy!
I felt amazing at the start, trying not to go off too fast as the crowds lined the streets. Tower Bridge was electric, and I was trying to take every moment in. The atmosphere around the whole course was incredible, crowds cheering, music blaring, bands playing.
At 15 miles, I was hit with a stitch and the temperatures were rising. I made sure to keep taking on water and gels, and the sprinklers throughout the course were an absolute blessing and kept me cool.
By 18 miles I was struggling with the heat, but seeing my Husband gave me a boost.
I was aware of my pace, but through the high buildings my watch wasn’t very accurate. By mile 21, I knew I wasn’t going to hit my planned time. I was sore, my legs were tired, and I just wanted to be finished, but I knew I had to dig deep for those last 5 miles.
Had a slight trip around Big Ben, thankfully I stayed upright! Birdcage Walk felt so long, but seeing Buckingham Palace and that final 250 metres gave me a boost, I had done it.
Completely overcome with emotion at the finish. I could hardly walk, but what an achievement.
I want to thank my running pals for all your support and advice. It meant so much, and I honestly couldn’t have achieved this without you.
And to the club, thank you for this amazing opportunity, one I will never forget.
Proud to say I’m officially a marathoner.
