29/12/11 - Slog in the Sand 2011 Results

An impressive 56 people from Kintyre and Argyll turned out to take part in the second Slog in the Sand at Westport Beach on Tuesday 27th November 2011.

All the more impressive as contestants had to brave the wind and rain in the 10k race across the undulating stretch of beach with a high tide to compete with too.

Kenny Campbell was the first male home pipping last year's winner Gary Turner followed by Craig Metcalf in third.

The ladies winner was Donna Robertson who beat off competition from her twin sister Fiona who finished second and an impressive run by Rachel Edwards to secure third. The Robertson twins, who hail from Campbeltown, are of course no strangers to securing top spots having both won Commonwealth bronze medals at Judo in the past.

The event was organised by Campbeltown Running Club who were delighted with the turn out with runners travelling from Lochgilphead to compete. Robert McDonald, chairperson of CRC, thanked everyone for attending before presenting club secretary Elaine Mceachy presented the trophies. Special thanks to the Coastguard for their help on the beact and Donald Campbell for his soup and anyone else who helped out on the day.

Everyone who completed the route were presented with a well deserved medal at the end and treated to some well deserved tea, coffee, juice and mince pies.

This race follows quickly on from the Tin Farm 5 race last Sunday, so there wasn't much rest and recovery time for most of the CRC competitors.

The weather conditions were ideal on Saturday with bright autumn sunshine and a brisk breeze to keep the runners cool. The race route was fast and flat, although it was still a tough as the route was congested at the start and underfoot conditions were slippery in areas.

Left to Right - Stuart Graham, Jamie Girvan, Fiona Graham, Elaine McGeachy, Kerry O'May,

Morvan McSporran,Emma Conley, Alix Geyer

There were approx 400 runners competing in the event from clubs all over Scotland. All of CRC runners had excellent performances with a number of people achieving personal best times and competed well, especially against experienced competition.

Unfortunately Tommy Morran had to pull out the race at 6km with an 'injury', but thankfully 'Tommy Zoom' was back to full health later in the day after a pepperoni pizza and a few pints!

23/10/11 - Handicap Race Series 2011 Overall Results

Last Friday night saw the culmination of The Wee Toon Runners 5 Race Series 2011, with an awards ceremony at the White Hart Hotel. The event is not affiliated to any club, being organized and marshalederyone who competed in by members of both JogScotland and Campbeltown Running Club, and even those who are members of neither. Races are open to anyone wishing to participate. There are five separate runs, usually on the last Tuesday of the summer months (May to September), each one covering a distance of three miles. The runs are on differing terrains. To make matters more interesting, the race is time handicapped, in an effort to bring runners of differing abilities closer together, so the so called “whippets” would start after a set period of elapsed time, taken from the first runner setting off. The object is simple---first runner back wins the race!

Below are the winners of each individual event:

Pennygown (May) - Susan Graham

Barr Glen (June) - John McGeachy

Chiskan (July) - Alix Geyer

Westport (August) - Cameron Campbell

Campbeltown (September) - Catriona Wilson

There were three prize categories which were male, female and overall winner. Below are the results:

Male Category

1st - Cameron Campbell

2nd - Neil John MacPhail

3rd - Tommy Morran

Female Category

1st - Alix Geyer

2nd - Elaine McGeachy

3rd - Jackie Fulton

Overall Winner

Cameron Campbell

The Overall Champion was also Cameron Campbell who amassed more points than Alix, over the five races. This feat is made all the more remarkable, when you learn that Cameron is only nine years old and is still at primary school!! His father, Donald, along with Suzy Ferguson are the main organizers of the event, and both Donald and Suzy were presented with thank you gifts on the evening, from monies donated by all those participating. Thanks also go to all of the various helpers and volunteers, of whom there are too many to mention. Without their help, there would not be an event.

This year has been a particular success, with many new faces taking part, for the first time. A total of 59 runners took part with the highest number being 41, at Wesport. Roll on next year.

A special thanks goes to Donald Campbell and Suzie Ferguson for their great organisational work during the year for the event.

The first CRC charity 24 hour relay took place at the weekend with runners running in blocks of one hour each. The object of the event was for people to guess the total distance that would be run over the 24 hours, with guesses charged at £1 a go.

The Bangladeshi Tandori restaurant kindly sponsored £100 for the event and the person who guessed nearest to the distance winning the money. The funds from the money raised would be split between Campbeltown Running Club and MacMillan Cancer Support.

The relay started on Friday evening at 6pm with Johnny McCormick running in slot one. Johnny got the event off to a flier with an impressive 8.38 miles and this set the tone for the entire relay.

The weather conditions were deteriarating on the Friday evening with strong winds and heavy rain making it difficult for the runners, however this didn't appear to dampen anyone's spirit. It also helped knowing that Donald Campbell was on standby for assistance for the change overs throughout the Friday eveningSaturday morning. The conditions started to improve about 6am on the Saturday morning and the competitors continued to push hard to clock up the mileage.

The final slot was completed by Tommy Morran at 6pm on the Saturday to complete the 24 hour event. Well done to everyone for their efforts at the weekend.

The total distance covered was an impressive 184.88 miles. There are 10 winners who all guessed 185 miles.

They are: Ali Sneddon, William Lampard, Christine Duncan, J Coffield, Kenny Docherty, S Partridge, Mary McKerral, A Docherty, M Bannatyne and A Glendinning. Well done!

The final total raised by the event was an impressive £1795.

Campbeltown Running Club would like to thank everyone who made donations to the event and also the Bangladeshi Tandori restaurant for providing the prize money. We would also like thank anybody who helped support the runners during the event.

A special mention should also go to Robert McDonald for all his efforts in organising the event. Without Robert's dedication and organisation then the event wouldn'y have been half as successful.

02/05/11 - Kintyre Way Relay revised route Torrisdale-Ifferdale

Below is a note from Rob Reid regarding information on a revised route from Torrisdale-Ifferdale:

Note that at Ifferdale Farmhouse (NR 770338), you proceed to the checkpoint at the farmhouse and then double back to head West on the track which already has Kintyre Way markers (the sky-blue round poles). From NR780360 (where you leave the track and plunge into dense forest) to NR779359 (where you cross the burn) and then uphill to NR778356 (end of a new forestry track which is not shown on some O.S. maps) is not an existing path - pure wilderness! I've put a few temporary markers, but will be back in the next few days to put in some more.

20/04/11 - London Marathon 2011

This year's Virgin London marathon took place on Sunday 17th April with Kenny Campbell, Charlie Dott, Donald Campbell, Lisa Hardie and Elaine McGeachy representing the club in the event.

Kenny and Charlie managed to the get places for the event in the 'good for age' category, Donald was successful in the public ballot, Lisa was competing with a charity place and Elaine got a Scottish Athletics entry with the club.

With over 37,000 competitors running the London marathon it's one of the biggest races of the calendar year and to have five members of the club at the event is a testiment to the progress of the club in the last 10 months.

Congratulations to all runners who competed well in tough conditions with high temperatures. Kenny Campbell completed the course with an outstanding time of 2:47:04, which is a PB for this distance. Charlie Dott soon followed with another excellent time of 3:10:43. Donald Campbell finished with a 4:37:18, which is a miracle considering he has been injured and hasn't trained for over 4 weeks! Lisa Hardie completed her first marathon with an impressive time of 4:43:04.

Unfortunately Elaine McGeachy didn't manage to finish the marathon after collapsing with heat stroke after mile 22. Elaine was competing well and her final results on her Garmin show her at mile 22 on 3 hours 20 mins. Thankfully Elaine is recovering well and will be back at training soon and ready to take on her next marathon in the near future!

Also, a special thanks should go to everyone who donated to the respective charities the runners were raising money for.

Photos of the race will be uploaded soon.

20/04/11 - Crinan Puffer 8.5 2011

Congratulations to Hendrie Barbour who was first Male Vet with a time of 51:51, Katie Ferguson (controversially!) was second in female vet category with 65:04 and Tommy Morran who was third in the Male Senior with 54:04.

Well done to all other CRC runners who competed and we will hopefully be able to post all the other results soon.

17/03/11 - Balloch Half Marathon Race Report

By Robert McDonald

A great day was had by all the local runners who took part in the above Half Marathon today. Some great times, but I will let those runners tell you about their sucesses. For me, I thought that it was a great chance to get a good time under the belt. I just wish that I had stayed in Dumbarton last night, rather than the 5 a.m. start that me and DJD had.I was unsure how to run this one---go out, guns blazing and try to hold on----or take the conservative approach and ease my way through the first eight or nine miles and go for the big finish. I went for the former---plugged 1 hour 35 mins into the Garmin "Virtual Partner" and set off.

First mile was always going to be fast 6 mins 40 secs, pretty flat with a wee bit of an incline. The next six were going pretty well--still under 7 minute mile pace and a third of a mile ahead of Virtual Hector :-) 47 mins through mile seven.

Saw a friendly face, or should that be "back" about 50 yards ahead, Kevin Scally, and thought that I may soon be up alongside of him. Not to be---Kevin's pacing was spot on and he went away from me, as I started to struggle with the pace. People were now passing me---not good for the morale.

8 miles came and I heard a voice on my shoulder saying "You,ve come a long way today". I was wondering if this was in my head, cos I had felt that I was running well. A guy passed me ---we chewed the fat for about a hundred yards. He had been reading "Campbeltown Running Club" on the back of my vest, and thought that he would gee me up a wee bit.

As he went about ten yards ahead he told me to watch out for the hill at mile nine. It wasn't a hill, more of an incline but enough to put a tired man through about a minute and a half of torture.

Pace slowed a wee bit to just over seven minute mile pace, but it felt a lot slower. The lead on "The Wee Man" was reducing to about 0.3 of a mile.

Time to just dig in, get the head down and try to hold on. Past mile ten---70 mins, but slowing. After eleven heard another friendly voice "How's it going Rab" It was Madscotsbloke's brother, CRAIG!!. A real nice bloke who was heading for a great time, and had got his pacing spot on. He looked strong as he strode away from me. "I wish I had ran with Craig, I thought" I had spoken to him before the start, but he wasn't sure what time he was looking for. I knew he was on a good one.

Another uphill to the 12 mile marker, but nearly home. Tired, I hit the home straight and managed to hold off a late challenge from a woman from Garscube Harriers, I think.

Time-------------------------------------------------------------1 hour 33 mins and 24 seconds. Delighted!!!!

MSB, Craig's time somewher in the 1.32s

14 mins off his PB. Be afraid, be very afraid.

17/03/11 -Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon Sunday 13th March

The Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon took place on Sunday 13th March with eight CRC members competing in the event. For some of the members it was there first competitive half marathon race. Thankfully they were helped before the race by the other experienced CRC members competing (the half marathon seasoned pro's) with their helpful advise and calming influence....it helped me anyway!

There were concerns the day before the race due to the heavy snow that fell on Balloch. Thankfully the roads were cleared by the heavy rain over night and this never affected the competitors underfoot conditions.

Once again all CRC competitors finished with excellent times, but a special mention should go to Kenny Campbell for finishing 13th overall with a race that had 446 competitors. An excellent achievement considering the level of competition competing at this event.

Below are the race details for the CRC members:

27/02/11 - February Frenzy 2011 Results

The first February Frenzy took place this morning with 23 participants competing in the handicap race in a route around Loch Lussa. The race was a circilar 6.5 mile route accross forest track and road.

As the start and finish were in the same position Donald set the competitors off in different directions on the route to add more interest to the race. It was a tough route which was made even more difficult with the changeable weather of sunshine, stong winds, rain and even hail stones during the race!

Congratulations to Jocelyn Richard who won the event with a clock time of 01:01:02.

08/01/11 - CRC TRIP TO MUNICH – OCTOBER 2011

A few days after Oktoberfest, Munich hosts a running festival that incorporates a fast, flat Marathon, half marathon, 10k and fun costume run and is hoped that CRC will be there for a trip away! The race itself takes place on Sunday 9th October and all courses take in most of the famous sights of the German city and finish in the grand Olympic Stadium. Just wanted to give advance notice to anyone who may wish to attend (along with partners/family/supporters – all welcome) so they can make plans and save.

It is hoped that Tommy Millar will book us up in the next month so we can secure early bird prices and pay a deposit and then pay up in instalments. The initial plan is to fly direct from Edinburgh to Munich on Friday 7th October and stay for 3 nights in a central 3-4* hotel on a bed and breakfast basis returning on the Monday, making it a long weekend and give us the Sunday night to sample the local beer and pretzels! The price will be roughly £250 which will include flights, accommodation and transfers. There are cheaper deals for accommodation but a lot of the cheap options are basic hotels a fair distance away from city or start/finish lines. Because it is Easyjet flights we would need to pay them up front but the hotel/transfers we could pay up, so roughly you would need to pay £140 initially. You would then enter whatever race you wanted on their website and of course start saving pennies for beer money, sorry pretzels.

You can get more information on the race at - http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.muenchenmarathon.de/&ei=AkomTZXnOdCHhQfsy4jTAg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDEQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmunich%2Bmarathon%26hl%3Den%26prmd%3Divns

If you are interested please let me know so I can get more definite pricing from Tommy, there may be options for discounts for bigger groups etc. Of course, even if some of us book now that doesn’t mean that others can’t book up later or book up on their own, just want to give some people the heads up to plan for the year ahead.
