Glasgow Marathon Report

Sunday 28th August saw the first Glasgow Marathon in 30 years taking place. This inaugural Glasgow Clyde Marathon was a trial year with a limited number of places available and saw participants start in Newton and head along the Rivers Clyde and Kelvin, as well as the Forth and Clyde Canal and the old railway line from Bowling to Dumbarton (competitors and spectators can make use of train stations close to the start and finish, if needed).

For me this was another chance to have a good long run and prepare for the double marathon I'm attempting later in the year, and when not chasing a pb time I had a chance to really enjoy a race and take in the route! I think this route would be a really great chance for anyone wanting to do a fast marathon or a first marathon as it is mostly flat.

Up towards Glasgow Uni until you go under the Kelvin Bridge is a bit of a climb but by no means Ballochgair or Bengullion......for this trial year there was no road closures however on the occasions I had to cross the road the green man was on my side. 3:51:40 was my chip time; nice to still get sub 4 hours on tired legs, having only had brief rest spells between KW Ultra, Arran Marathon and Glasgow Marathon.

My hamstring/hip did niggle me from about 16 miles onward, and I properly eased off in the last 6 miles so pleased enough with 9th female/5th in V40 age cat. I'd like to give this race a proper go next year with fresh legs. The finish was well equipped with food and drinks for runners and the local high school was there where I showered before heading home. The best advice I can give and my big lesson learned from today is not to jump straight in the car (half an hour) after a marathon and expect to have a comfortable journey and jump out the car with ease at the end!!! That part was worse than running

the marathon!!
