The Oban Highland Games was packed with a busy programme of athletics as well as piping, dancing and the usual Games heavy weight competitions. With only a few days’ notice it wasn’t possible to get a bus full of youngsters to attend (on the cards for next year!) but we did manage to get a great group representing Campbeltown. With heavy rain overnight and forecast for the day we expected it to be called off but the Games went ahead as planned and didn’t dampen the experience.

Notable achievements for the juniors include a whole range of wins for Cameron Campbell: 3rd 100m, 1st 600m, 1st High Jump, 1st Long Jump, 1st Junior in Hill Race and 3rd in Shot Putt. Coll Houston picked up 3rd in Long Jump and 3rd in 600m. Gregor Campbell and MaryAnn Wylie got 3rd in Junior Hill Race. Millar Irwin stole the show with an impressive dash to the finish line in the egg and spoon race!

MaryAnn Wylie and Ashleigh Connor (as well as myself!) joined in with some of the senior events along with Matthew Turner, Gary Turner and Stuart McGeachy. With an impressive line-up of senior athletes taking part, Matthew, Gary and Stuart did very well against the likes of Andrew Bouchart and Gary Muir! Matthew and Gary competed in the shorter distances such as 800 and 400m also coming away with some wins. Some of the events included the 3200m, 1600m and the notorious 2.25 mile hill race…. The hill was steep and incredibly muddy – it was an experience! Suffice to say against those athletes (and a pretty unfair handicap although I am biased!) it was really only sore legs going home to the McGeachy household although Stuart did pick up 3rd local in the 1 mile event which paid for his pizza – result!

Another CRC familiar face, Susan Turner was also there to help with the athletics but she couldn’t resist a wee race and took part in the ‘Grandparents race’ and, of course, won J
